The Joint Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Social Medicine & Population Health (the UK and Ireland’s leading population health conference) and the International Epidemiology Association European Congress is taking place in Cork from 4th-6th September 2019!
The conference, organised by the School of Public Health in University College Cork and the wider public health community in Cork, is expected to attract over 300 delegates from all over the world, ranging from senior academics to postgraduate students. A range of disciplines will be covered such as epidemiology, health services research, psychology, public health and social sciences.
Keynote lectures will be delivered by:
Professor Kenneth Rothman (Boston University, USA)– The End of Statistical Significance Questing
Professor Margaret Whitehead (University of Liverpool, UK) – “Barely Believable” or Nakedly Truthful: what is the point of doing research on child poverty and health?
Professor Valerie Beral (University of Oxford, UK) – The power of collaborative research in Epidemiology
The conference will address a wide range of themes, relevant to the health and wellbeing of the population, including social inequalities in health, the causes and prevention of major forms of cancer, the societal level determinants of mental health and wellbeing, obesity & food policy.
Chair of the Local Organising Committee, Professor Ivan Perry said “I am truly delighted that this major international conference focused on understanding the factors that influence the health and wellbeing of the Population is returning to the School of Public Health in Cork for the first time since 2007. We are also delighted and honoured that the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor John Sheehan will host a reception for conference delegates in the Glucksman Gallery on UCC campus on Wednesday evening September 4th.”
The Regional Councillor for Europe Internationa Epidemiological Association (IEA) – Professor Patricia Kearney said: “We are greatly looking forward to hosting this joint conference in UCC and welcome the opportunity to develop links among researchers working in epidemiology and public health across Europe and beyond”.
Declan Whelan Curtin, School of Public Health Manager added: “This year a sustainability theme has emerged organically through the Local Organising Committee and Working Groups. The conference will be nearly completely plastic-free, will feature a meat-free day, and have various sustainable options available to delegates throughout. In addition, this year will introduce the use of a tailored conference app called Whova. Whova will allow delegates to access their conference programme and abstracts via their smartphone or tablet, build custom programmes and even network with other delegates through custom discussion forums. While this year will still see the hard copy handbook and journal, the local organising committee hopes to nudge members in the direction of electronic copy with the hope of fully paperless meetings in the future. Feedback on these innovations is crucial so be sure to let the Local Organising Committee and SSM Committee know what you think either in person during the meeting or through the members’ survey which will be circulated after. The Local Organising Committee is thrilled to be hosting this prestigious event and looking forward to providing over 260 delegates with a hearty Irish welcome in September.”
