Network Platform now live!

The SSM Network Platform is now live! You can log in to it through the members area of the SSM website. Please log in and make sure your details are up to date. The platform allows SSM members to indicate their research areas and to connect with members with shared interests. We hope that the platform will become a vibrant forum for collaboration, networking and exchanging ideas. You might have some questions about the forum. See below for our FAQ list.

What information is visible about me? The Network Platform will show the following information about you: Name: Title, First name, Last name Position/Job Title Organisation Department Town/City Email address If you are an Early Career Researcher (ECR) or not Interest 1 Interest 2 Interest 3 Interest areas are taken from what you input on your membership record, and these will act as keywords for other members to search for you with. For example, if one of your interest areas is ‘Diet’, then members will be able to find you by searching for the keyword ‘Diet’. Your record will also include an interactive map of your town/city. Please note that this map does not locate your exact address, but only your town/city.


Who can access this information? Only current SSM members can access the Network Platform via the secure Members Area log in page.


Did I give permission for SSM to share my details with other members? Yes, by becoming a member of the SSM and completing the application form, you have agreed to the following statement: “Your basic details may be shared between members, however you can update your preferences in the members area.”
– What if I do not want people to be able to access my details? You can “opt out” of the Network Platform so other members cannot access your details. To do this, please log into the Members Area, and click on the page ‘Update Your Details’. At the bottom of the page, please tick the box that states: “Some basic information about you will be available to other members of the Society on the Network Platform pages of the website. Please tick if you do not wish your information to be shared with other members”. This will remove you from the Search results, so other members cannot access your record. However, you will still be able to search for other members if you wish.


How do I change the details that are visible, for example, my email address? In the Members Area, please click the page ‘Update My Details’ and change your details where necessary. Please note that this will impact your record on our membership database, so if you change your email address, we will then contact you through the new email address for all SSM membership correspondence.


Can I opt out at any time? Yes, if you no longer wish to have your details visible on the Network Platform, then please log into the Members Area, and click on the page ‘Update My Details’. At the bottom of the page, please tick the box that states: “Some basic information about you will be available to other members of the Society on the Network Platform pages of the website. Please tick if you do not wish your information to be shared with other members”.


When I log into the Members’ Area, I cannot click on the ‘Search and ‘Forum’ pages. Why is this? Only current SSM members can access the Network Platform, so if your membership is due for renewal or has lapsed, then you will no longer have access to the ‘Search or ‘Forum’ pages within the Members Area. Also, if you have applied for membership, you will not have access to the Network Platform until your application has been approved by the Society.


I searched for a colleague on the Network Platform before, and now I have searched again I cannot find them. Why is this? The Network Platform works with a live database, so if someone updates their details or cancels their membership, then this will affect the Search results on the Network Platform. For example, if you search for an SSM member in Leeds, and your colleague has updated their address from Leeds to London, then they will not show up in the results for Leeds anymore.
